Tons of people hear the phrase hemp seed oil and think of a certain leafy green…but guess what? They’re actually different plants, and hemp seed oil has huge benefits! It’s also quite different from CBD oil, which you can read about here.

What’s Hemp Seed Oil?

Hemp is a variety of the cannabis plant, containing a very tiny amount of naturally occurring tetrahydrocannabinoids (THC). The hemp seed oil itself is made by pressing hemp seeds to extract oil. Note: this won’t get you or your dog high, so no worries about a loopy pup!

It has a slightly nutty flavor and possesses lots of great nutritional perks for both humans and dogs. Plus, my pups both seem to enjoy the flavor when I drizzle a bit on their food and stir it up. I also think it’s quite tasty on salads as a dressing!

The Benefits of Hemp Seeds

Hemp Seeds are rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which is a necessary building block for hormone-like chemicals in the body called prostaglandins. They help smooth muscles, control inflammation and body temperature, and assist in several other functions.

Research shows hemp seeds can be helpful for dogs suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and other forms of joint pain.

It has high quantities of omega 3 & 6 Fatty Acids. Normally found in high quantities in fish oils, and added currently by manufacturers to many dog foods, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids are an essential part of canine nutritional needs.

What’s the Difference Between Hemp and CBD oil?

Cannabidiol (CBD) oil  (like hemp seed oil above) is a non-psychoactive oil that’s made from also made from low-THC hemp, but is processed from the flowers and leaves instead of seeds. It’s helpful with relieving anxiety, among many other benefits – check ‘em out here!
