4 Simple Steps to Creating a Room for Your Dog

After the early days of bonding with your dog, it can be hard to leave them behind each day. Much like a baby, you grow a close bond with them, and having to be apart for a while can be hard. The truth of the matter is that your pup can handle being apart from you for a little while, so it’s probably worse on you than it is on them.
With that in mind, creating a comfortable space for your dog to relax and roam while you’re not there is really important. It can give you some peace of mind that there is a ‘safe’ zone for them to be in, as well as provide comfort to them.
Whether it is an entire room for them, or just the corner of one, here are some top tips to help you to create a comfortable and safe space for them to be when you’re out of the house.

Set Up Their Room
A dog space does not need to be a really large space. If you’ve got the room, great. But many dogs are fine being on their own in a smaller space. If you can limit how they get out or have access to the rest of the house, then that can be a good thing.
Baby gates, locked doors, or crates can all help this. Then you don’t have to worry about them causing damage, or them getting hurt in any way.
Keep Your Dog’s Safety As Priority
If you’re new to owning a dog, then you might not be aware of some of the things that dogs can’t be around. Some plants can be harmful to them, as well as the more obvious things like cleaning products and electrical cables.
Do a mini-risk-assessment of the area so you can secure cables if they are on display, as well as picking up small things of the floor, and making sure that the room is the right temperature.
Create a Cozy Bedding Area
Believe it or not, dogs can spend half of their day asleep. Unless they’re like our Ginger was, who could literally sleep alllllll day and night if we let her! Having a comfortable spot for them to relax in is a must.
They can sit and rest, as well as snuggle down and sleep, and they’ll be able to do so in comfort. Think a dog bed, large pillows, throws and blankets. No need to go overboard, but make sure that it is comfortable and safe for them too.
Add Fun Toys & Games
In addition to the physical exercise from the walks that you take your dog out on, they do need some mental stimulation. So if you can leave out some things for them to play with, it will mean they’re less likely to reach for your shoes.
A chew toy, a rattle toy, or a puzzle-style toy can all be good ideas. Click for some of our favorite puzzles! Just make sure they have no small parts that can hurt your pet. Some people leave the radio on for their dog or their TV with something like Animal Planet on, so the room isn’t in complete silence for them.
